Over the past two years, there have been a lot of interesting developments on the Microsoft Business Intelligence horizon. The releases of PerformancePoint Server, SharePoint 2007, Excel Services, and SQL Server 2008 have strengthened the stack. The announcements around the “Kilimanjaro” release of SQL Server, including the “Gemini” self-service BI offering and the “Madison” large-scale data warehouse technology have created great anticipation. And the just-announced integration of PerformancePoint Monitoring and Analytics into SharePoint and the discontinuation of the Planning module has created some confusion, not to mention controversy.

Is Microsoft a real BI company, or just a software company with some mid-range BI offerings? Is its strategy of focusing on the Office and SharePoint user-base a savvy game plan, or mere folly? Does the recession help or hurt Microsoft in its BI execution? Come discuss these topics and more with Andrew Brust, of twentysix New York. Andrew has worked with Microsoft BI since its inception, is a co-author of Programming Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (Microsoft Press) and sits on Microsoft’s BI Partner Advisory Council. He is also a self-styled strategist who is interested not just in pontificating on all this stuff, but in picking the brains of all in attendance for their views on these very matters.

Microsoft recently announced that PerformancePoint will be discontinued. Functionality will be merged into SharePoint Server. More info is all over the net, but specifically here: http://entmag.com/news/arti.... In this meetup, Andrew will discuss strategy, product alignment, and cover topics we did not cover in the previous session with msft. Please join us!

    •  A very insightful take on MS's latest product decisions and acquisitions. It was great that we were able to tie together some of the topics discussed in previous meetups: data security & need for masking, user-reluctance to let go of Excel, and consolidation in the BI space.
    •  Fantastic discussion. Would be great to gain additional insight into what MSFT plans to do with their recent acquisitions.
    •  I really liked that the presentation provided structure around the topics, but that it really faciliated discussion and made the session very interactive. It was great to hear many different points of view from folks involved in different aspects of BI. Great session!
    •  The presenter did a fine job of presenting Microsoft's offerings, and indeed, he provided a bit of the back story to boot. Table talk ensued - several tangential conversations and observations. If there's any one measure of a great meetup this is it: there was more material to talk about than the time allowed.
    •  Good discussion and subject
